I am now on the Roadscholar tour. After breakfast we had a lecture about the twentieth century sculptor, Ivan Mestrovich. If you get a chance look at his works. Very impressive. We spent the morning walking through Diocletian’s Palace built in 295 CE. Some of the underground area reminded me of the Cardo in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Some of the streets within the palace reminded me of Fez, Morocco. After our tour we were on our own. I hooked up with a Jewish couple from Florida. He is a retired reform Rabbi. We visited the Split Sinagogue which is the third oldest active synagogue in Europe. They did not have a Rabbi. The Rabbi in Zagreb visits about once a year. There are about 100 Jews in Split, mostly culturally Jews. 2000 Jews in all of Croatia. They don’t do circumcision any more because of the fear of being identified as Jewish. Originally there were Jews here during the Roman time but many came after the Spanish Inquisition. The synagogues was built in 1510. Later in the afternoon I went out for gelato and a delightful walk around the harbor. Fell in love with an incredible schooner.
