First Full Day in Arenal

Volcano Arenal last erupted in 1968 and completely wiped out the surrounding area. Today it is hard to believe that as we are completely surrounded by rainforest.

Our home away from home in Arenal

Our first activity of the day was zip lining. I have never done this before and I have to admit that I was definitely nervous. It turned out to be an amazing experience. We went on seven zip lines. Two of the lines were short, about a couple of football fields long. However, five of them were about a half mile long. They were also quite high up in the air and you really got going fast. Couple of times I didn’t slow myself down enough at the end and I really came in hot. However, the crew were well trained and they were able to get me stopped. The following pictures were taken by professionals at the site.

Ready to go

The next pictures are of me on the zip line from start to finish.

Now for Zoe.

In mid scream

I took the following two pictures after I got off the zip line to give you another perspective of how things looked.

After zip lining, we went into La Fortuna for lunch and a little free time. La Fortuna is the major city in the Arenal district.

In Costa Rica, they use trees as fence posts. You can cut off a branch of the tree, stick it in the ground and it will grow another tree. It is also fast growing. Just another example of how eco-friendly they are in this country. The mountain in the picture is the volcano.

Here are some pictures I took at our lodge on the way down to dinner. The lodge is made up of individual units. There is a swimming area, dining hall, and a reception area. It is a beautiful area but not quite as rustic as our previous place.

Our dining room. We have a buffet for breakfast and dinner.

After dinner, we visited a place that does research on bats. It actually was quite fascinating and I learned quite a bit. Bats do not get cancer. Since they have a similar genetic make up as humans, studying bats could lead to a cure for cancer. Some bats eat bugs and some bats eat fruit. There are also some bats that are so big they can eat other bats and birds. Here are the pictures from this visit.

A frog was waiting for us at the center
The researcher removing the bat from a capture bag. They capture the bats with nets that they string across trees and paths. They once caught a Japanese tourist in one of their nets. It really freaked him out. They transfer the bats into the bags because it is safer for them.
Look at the teeth on this guy.
This bat is about 3 months pregnant. The fetus could be about 25% of the size of the mother. Can you imagine giving birth to a baby the size of a six year old child?
