We are actually staying in a condominium unit about 3 km from Akumal. The complex has free access to the Yal-Ku cenote and lagoon. That is where we’ve been snorkeling the last few days and you’ve seen all the fish pictures I’ve taken. Before I discuss the activities of the day, I took a picture of the breakfast that we’ve been making each morning.

Today we decided to actually check out Akumal. Having had dinner there the other night we knew it was very touristy. There is however a public beach. So we went there this morning to go snorkeling. It was a dud. Saw very few fish, and they were not very beautiful. They actually look like the fish I would have for dinner. This is the place you’re supposed to be able to swim with turtles. However, because of the environmental impact, they have closed off that area completely. I’m not too unhappy about it, because I have swum with turtles a couple of times in the past. Also, we had such nice snorkeling here in the lagoon. I did enjoy snorkeling around just because I enjoy being in the water. The temperature of the water is ideal. You can stay in it all day but it’s not too warm just refreshing. It was a nice sandy beach. Very pretty. There were a number of pelicans around. Here are the pictures that were taken from the beach.

When we were done at the beach, we decided to actually go into the little town of Akumal. The town is on the other side of the main highway away from the beach. Very little touristy stuff. I mainly walked around, taking pictures, and Berni was looking to buy sunglasses. The surprising thing is that there were beautiful murals all over the place. So here are the fruits of my labor, bunches of pictures of murals plus interesting sites in the little town. This is very typical of a Mexican town, except for the murals. The murals were a complete surprise. This is why I like traveling not with a tour because you stumble upon these priceless little finds.

We enjoyed the town so much we decided to come back for dinner. We found a little Taqueria.

Tomorrow we leave Akumal and head for Huay-Pix near the Belize border. It is at least a 3-4 hour drive. So far driving in Mexico has been very comfortable. I’ve been doing all the driving and Berni has been doing the navigating. We make a good team. We will be staying in a rustic cabin right on the water’s edge. It is lagoon, and they have kayaks available for us.
