Last Day in Jerusalem

Tomorrow morning, I move onto Boston to visit with some college roommates before returning home to Portland. Today I took the light rail up to Mount Hertzl where the National Cemetery and Yad Vashem are located. I choose not to go to Yad Vashem, the holocaust museum, because I have been there two times. I do visit the cemetery though most times that I come to Israel. I especially like to go to Hannah Szenes’ grave. It’s not clearly marked and the past few times I’ve stumbled upon it. This time I was unable to find it. That was a little disappointing. Hannah was a young Hungarian who immigrated to Israel in 1939. She was an exceptional poet. She joined the special forces and was parachuted back into Hungary to rescue Jews. Unfortunately, she was captured and executed at the age of 23 by the Nazis.

After the visiting the cemetery, I took the light rail to Ben Yehuda Street. This area has many walk streets, shops, and restaurants. I primarily went there to buy some Ahava skin products. I also treated myself to ice cream and sat and watched people going by. From there, it was an easy walk to my Airbnb. I was out for over three hours and it was very hot. I am never coming to Israel again in June or any part of the summer for that matter.

Yitzhak Rabin’s gravesite. Rabin was prime minister of Israel from 1992 to 1995 when he was assassinated by a right wing Israeli. He had signed several historic agreements with Palestinians as part of the Oslo Accords and won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Golda Meir‘s gravesite. Golda Meir was Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. She was the first female head of state in the Middle East. She was prime Minister during the Yom Kippur war, which led to her being elected out of office.

One of the walk streets off of Ben Yehuda. Many of the walk streets in the area have interesting decorations hung between buildings.

The apartment complex my Airbnb is located in. Not much to look at from the outside but it is a comfortable apartment in a great location.
