People in these countries don’t travel a lot. They seem to be quite content to live the life that they’re leading. Most are middle-class. Most own a home and a car. They have very traditional values. Marriage is important. Unfortunately that means gay people are not treated as equals. There is a strong emphasis on community and family. Most live in multigenerational homes. I’ve seen similar cultures pretty much in every developing country that I have visited. For example people in Southeast Asia have very similar values in terms of family and community. The big difference with the Stans is that they were under Soviet control for about 70 years and under Russian influence before that. That basically brought these people into the western world. Their towns look more western with large wide streets. They are very clean compared to what you would see in the Middle East or Southeast Asia. Their economies are better. Of course there is still room for growth. so this is really a very interesting mix of some western influence in terms of the Soviet influence and a traditional conservative ethnic culture.
