From Bukhara to Khiva along the Silk Road and Through the Desert

The distance we had to drive was 280 miles but it took us about seven hours because part of the road was pretty rough. It was not a very interesting ride because it was very flat and not very exciting. As we got closer to Khiva though it started to get more interesting. They provided a box lunch for us because they couldn’t guarantee that we could eat in a place that would be safe. Safe meaning getting some intestinal bug not safe in terms of terrorists.

What was in our box lunch.
I took a close-up of the apple juice box because I’m going to be talking about my travels with third graders when I get back from this trip. I thought they’d find this Apple juice box kind of interesting or cute.
A Muslim cemetery. Noticed that the graves are above ground just like in the Jewish cemetery.
This is the size of a van in central Asia. Basically it’s the size of a regular car with the roof shape being that of a van. Trucks are no bigger than this either. In fact, I don’t see any big cars or vans or trucks on the road.
First sight of the wall of the old city of Khiva
The hotel has a swimming pool and we had time before dinner, so I went swimming. The water is frigid. I might not go in again.

Dinner tonight was at the hotel and it was a buffet. There was a nice variety and again I forgot to take pictures.
