Pamplona to Leon

Today we leave Basque Country as we head west across the north of Spain. We made one more stop in Basque Country at Ubidea where we visited an archeological laboratory. In my last post, I talked about Charlemagne’s lost battle. He lost many soldiers who were buried in a common site. That site over the centuries was used as an ossuary. The laboratory in Ubidea is analyzing this site. They have currently dug down to the sixteenth century so they are far from reaching the layer that would contain Charlemagne’s soldiers. We learned a little bit about identifying skulls and other stuff, but we were not allowed to take any pictures. After this visit, we had lunch at a local tavern, which was owned by a woman which is typical of traditional Basque society which is matriarchal.

Again on our journey, we stopped at the small village of Castrojeriz in order to walk another part of the El Camino. El Camino not only goes through countryside, but it also goes through many towns.

After getting into Leon, we took a short walk around the old town.
