Trogir

First stop on our boat, Casanova, was the town of Trogir. On the way we got a lecture on history of Croatia. Croatia was part of the Roman Empire until the 5th century, then the Byzantine empire until the 6th and 7th centuries when it was overrun by Slavic tribes, mainly Croats and Avars. Then through the Middle Ages there were fiefdoms and kingdoms mainly aligned with  Austria and Hungary. From the 15th through 18th centuries the area was under siege from the Ottoman Empire who was determined to conquer Vienna. There were many fortresses built. The coast along the Adriatic came under the influence of Venice. During the 18th century the area became part of Austria-Hungary. After WW I, with fall of the Austria-Hungarian empire, the neighboring areas eventually formed the country of Yugoslavia. More to come with the next lecture. The pictures are of the town of Trogir which is very picturesque.

  1. Your trip sounds fantastic. Mine not so. I don’t think I will try traveling by myself again. I am in Barcelona after a 7 day tour around Spain. Madrid,Cordoba,Sevilla,Corona and Toledo. Did get to see and spend some good time at a few places but did not get the Indepth history you are getting. I’ve also been sick so…I have 3 more tours from Barcelona, tomorrow a 3 countries in 1 day tour. Then a Gaudi tour in the city. Maybe if I didn’t have this cold I would be able to run around as I had planned. It is quite interesting how much the Spanish people belive that Columbus is a hero because he discovered America, they don’t say Americas, very infaticaly just America. They also don’t mention how much harm he and the other Spanish “explorers” did.. I can’t wait to get together and compare notes. Be safe E
