Fourth and Last Day in Gijon

On this day, we decided to spend the morning relaxing and not go anywhere until after lunch. Also, lunch was leftover paella. Since we have been here, we have gotten into the habit after breakfast of going across the street and having café con leche. It’s an outside café and we get a beautiful view of the water.

After lunch, we took off for our excursion of the day, which included two stops just east of Gijon. The first was Parque Del Cabo San Lorenzo which is a promontory with some beautiful views.

Looking back at Gijon
A statue in the park of which I have no idea what it is.
How would you like to live here?

Our next stop was Playa de Estano. We actually walked down to the beach. As I was sitting on a rock close to the water, a big wave came up and completely got my socks and shoes wet. I saw absolutely no tide pools. I was surprised that there were no living things like urchins, starfish or mussels. In Oregon if you get close to the water like that, there’s all kinds of life in the tide pools.

All three nights that we went out for dinner in Gijon, we went to the same restaurant. It was by far the closest good restaurant to us just two blocks away. We have had the same waitress. The food is outstanding. The first night we had octopus, the second night seafood paella. Tonight Reggie had fried calamari and I had the seafood casserole with squid, shrimp, and baby eel that was to die for. I wish I could’ve got a recipe for the sauce. It had to be one of the best seafood meals I’ve ever had. We really got to know our waitress, and she always smiled at us when we came in. Brought us our white wine before we even asked for it. Tonight since it was our last night, we were able to get a picture of the three of us. Going to the same place 3 nights in a row made it a very special experience.

Our Airbnb is a wonderful two bedroom unit on the third floor overlooking the ocean. The parking garage is under the building and our spot was on the third floor under the building. To get there I had to go down three ramps. When in the ramp if I had a foot on each side of the car, that was a lot, incredibly tight quarters for a car. It was a good thing I rented a compact. Driving the car in and out of that garage has definitely been stressful. However, if we didn’t have the car, we wouldn’t have been able to do the incredible things that we have done. But the car has definitely been an adventure. Not only this silly garage but the damage that I did to the fender that luckily I was able to get fixed. Tomorrow we drive back to Bilbao and return the car. We will meet up with our overseas adventure tour group. We will spend the next two weeks with them, ending up in Porto, Portugal.
