Hunting and gathering at the Oregon Coast – Day 1

My daughter Janet, and I drove over to the Oregon coast to spend three days hunting and gathering. The objective is to gather things that people don’t usually eat and see if they taste good enough to repeat. We spent the first night in Newport Beach. We had dinner at a restaurant called Local Ocean Seafoods which I think is probably the best seafood restaurant on the coast. We had a four course dinner of oyster shooters, this incredible tuna dish, steamed clams, and a link cod dish.

This morning we got up at 6:15 and headed out to seal rock to get the super low tide. We were able to gather sea urchins and acorn barnacles. Way back in my younger years, I actually ate sea urchin at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles and hated it. It tasted like mud. I swore never to eat sea urchin again. So this was going to be interesting.

Here are pictures taken at Seal Rock. There really were some impressive tide pools.

We then drove to Tillamook. After a stop at the Fred Meyer to get provisions, we went on to Garibaldi to crab off the 12th St. pier. Since we didn’t have the boat, we didn’t bring our big crab traps. We had two smaller traps and a snare device that was used with a fishing pole. Janet was having fun hurling the smaller traps off the pier. Unfortunately we mostly caught baby crabs by the dozen. Here are some of the pictures taken on the 12th St. pier.

After crabbing, we went to our rental house in Rockaway to prepare our feast. Our house is right by the lake on the south end of Rockaway.

Janet made this incredible dinner. Dinner tonight was pasta Aglio e Olio with fresh Uni (sea urchin), Dungeness crab, acorn barnacles, and salad greens.
